As pointed out in
http://www.inf.ed.ac.uk/systems/newsletters/2006-06/, it is now possible to send email via the Informatics mail server from outside
.ed.ac.uk
.
Here is one way of setting this up in Apple Mail:
- Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts, and select the account you are using for outgoing mail via Informatics.
- Select the drop-down item labeled Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), and choose Add Server. You will get a pop-up dialogue box.
- For Outgoing Mail Server, enter the server name
smtp.inf.ed.ac.uk
.
- For Server Port, put
465
.
- Click the check-box labeled Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).
- For Authentication, select the option
Password
, then add your DICE user name and password in the boxes below.
- Press OK, and close the Preferences dialogue box.
- The first time you send mail, you may be asked to accept the Informatics Certificate, which you should do. You may also be asked to re-confirm your DICE password and add it to your Keychain. Say OK to this, and thereafter you can just send email without further authentication.
