Notes for 16 Mar 2009

  • Discussion of person specification for Informatics Tutors - further information available at next meeting. Neil confirmed that ITO had managed to provisionally recruit someone to design and deliver a programme of training for all of the School's tutor and demonstrators.
  • Support for August Resit Exams - meeting realised that this was difficult to arrange, particularly given the number of staff and students who won't be in town immediately prior to the resit exams. We discussed the possibility of peer mentoring, or online sign up for lab sessions, although didn't come to a specific conclusion.
  • Extent to which School should be Tracking Student Attendance and Performance - the meeting agreed that this level of pastoral student support was necessary, but felt it difficult to identify suitable ways of gathering this information, particularly given that not much was absolutely required [attendance, submission etc are all up to the student]. It was agreed that the current policy of contacting students who had missed two tutorials was sensible, with the added suggestion that students should possibly be required to respond to that letter, documenting their reason for non-attendance [maybe a web-form?].
  • Pathways through our UG and PGT Programmes - again, it was agreed that this would be a useful tool for applicants and current students. It was agreed that students had differing end-targets, but that generally people were looking for advice on suggested routes to further study [MSc, PhD etc] or employment [financial, technical etc]. James agreed to consider this further and report back at the next meeting.
