How to record serial numbers for devices with multiple serial numbers

For DICE machines (only), for the clientreport mechanism to work properly we rely on the system's motherboard serial tallying with the relevant serial number as recorded in the inventory. The majority of our kit has just one serial number provided by the manufacturer and this serial number is what is reported by the system's motherboard (via 'dmidecode').

However, sometimes we purchase kit from suppliers who effectively build systems from component parts from other manufacturers. In this case, the supplier's serial is unlikely to be the same as the serial number of the system's motherboard. So that the clientreport mechanism to work correctly, we consider the system's motherboard serial number to be the 'primary serial number' of the system and this is the serial number that we record in the relevant orders file. The supplier's serial number is still recorded in the inventory, but as an alternative serial number.

Identify the serial number to be recorded as the primary serial number

This process should normally be completed by the individual installing DICE on the machine

  1. Install the system with DICE as normal
  2. Once the system has been installed
    1. As root,
      /usr/sbin/dmidecode -s system-serial-number
    2. Take note of the reported serial number as this will be considered the system's primary serial number
    3. Provide this serial number to the procurement team

Recording the primary serial number and the supplier's serial number

This process should normally be completed by the procurement team

  1. Obtain the primary serial number from the C(S)O installing the system
  2. Record the primary serial number in the relevant orders file
    1. using rfe orders/{order-no}
  3. Wait for at least 5 minutes for the serial number to be recorded
  4. Record the supplier's serial number as the alternative serial number
    ii edit --serial {primary-serial} --serial_alt {supplier-serial}
