Samba Server Information

The need to upgrade the Samba servers to FC5 means that we now have the opportunity to configure the servers as was originally intended. This document describes how the samba service should look once the upgrade has taken place.

In essence there will be two servers available, admin.smb.inf.ed.ac.uk which will only provide samba access to filespace locally mounted on the server and smb.inf which provides access to NFS mounted filespace. After its upgrade to FC5, admin.smb will not provide access to any NFS mounted shares and similarly smb.inf will not allow access to those filesystems mounted on admin.smb.

This is particularly important in the case of home directory shares. Certain users have their home directories mounted on admin.smb and these are the only users who should mount the homes share from admin.smb. At time of writing, these users are:

  • Agnieszka Ciulkin
  • Anna Hobbes
  • Andrew Finnie
  • Avril Heron
  • Alex Judd
  • Alastair Knowles
  • Sandy Colquhoun
  • Alyson Macdonald
  • Charmaine Wilson
  • Caroline Hastings

  • Sofia Freijeiro-Mato
  • Shirley Lee
  • Sam Falconer
  • Sarah White
  • Alison Jaggard
  • Valerie Caldwell
  • Julie Young

  • Zoe Wyatt

All other users should mount the homes share from smb.inf.ed.ac.uk.

The following shares are mounted on, and should be accessed via, admin.smb. Their location in the /group hierarchy is also given:

  • fhadmin - /group/admin/fhadmin
  • DTCadmin - /group/admin/DTCadmin
  • dccadmin - /group/admin/dccadmin
  • igsadmin - /group/admin/igsadmin
  • igsapps - /group/admin/agsapps
  • igsadminRW - /group/admin/igsadmin
  • igsappsRW - /group/admin/agsapps
  • pgrfiles - /group/admin/pgrfiles
  • pgrfilesRW - /group/admin/pgrfiles
  • itoadmin - /group/admin/ito
  • bpadmin - /group/admin/bpadmin
  • room3421 - /group/admin/room3421
  • school - /group/admin/school
  • mklmda - /group/admin/mklmda
  • ipabadmin - /group/admin/ipabadmin

these share will continue to be NFS exported and thus will be accessable in their old places under the /group heirarchy on DICE machines.

All other shares, in particular group and aiai should be accessed via smb.inf.ed.ac.uk.

Both samba servers will continue to offer print services. Note that it will continue to be necessary for users to have a samba share mounted before thay can access printers via the samba server. Users who are having difficulty printing via samba should check that they are not attempting to print vis smb.inf.ed.ac.uk whilst mounting shares from admin.smb.inf.ed.ac.uk or vice-versa.
