SL7 DICE Desktop Upgrade Post-mortem

* multi-user machines

  • were upgraded too late so students had started on SL7 desktops with only SL6 multi-user machines available
  • we need to have multiple versions in parallel
  • don't necessarily hold back for everything to be ready for server platform, might still work fine earlier on even if base platform incomplete

* forgetting lab exam environment needs some server platform elements, e.g. iptables etc

* public access desktop

  • provide and repeatedly announce
  • maybe an NX or VM image provided early on for users to test on their own desktop

* process was too long from start to end of rollout, more than 9 months

  • should have repeated message that there was an SL7 test machine for users to try pre-upgrade as many didn't seem to know although support did generally advise users in advance to try out things; we had very few complaints
  • more continuous publicity about fundamental changes, e.g. gnome
  • managing expectations, warn users that old tools may not work (although best effort to port should be made where possible)
  • warning about deprecated(ing) software, e.g. acrobat, xv, vm-emacs, skype
  • more explanation about what about upgrade process entails

* coordination
