LCFG install mechanism rewrite (68)

Period Hours
2010 Q1 91
2010 Q2 42
2010 Q3 18
Total 151 (4.3 weeks)

The first phase of the project was to evaluate other Linux install mechanisms (eg SL5, Fedora, LIVE CDs (such as Knoppix, Clonezilla etc) to see whether we could base our LCFG install on one of these mechanisms. However, all of these turned out to be somewhat baroque and not particularly flexible, so the decision was taken to make a fresh start, but using techniques borrowed from these other mechanisms.

One of the hopes of the project was that we could collaborate with IS on integrating the LCFG install with PIE. However, IS are considering ditching PIE in favour of stock Microsoft tools.

The effort budget was 4 weeks, so the project was slightly over budget at 4.3 weeks. The project may have taken slightly less time if the effort had been expended over a shorter time frame.

The new mechanism is in service for F13 and will be deployed for SL5.6 when that arrives. Documentation is here.
