---++ !PhD Thesis Proposal Submission This is an interim procedure which allows students to submit thesis proposals for convenient review. It employs a simple 'drop box' system; support have defined a directory into which students can add files, but not read or otherwise modify. The path is:

/afs/inf.ed.ac.uk/group/iss/phdsubmit/thesisproposal/x/

(_where 'x' is the proposal number_) You can list current possible proposal numbers by checking the contents of the parent directory: =$ ls /afs/inf.ed.ac.uk/group/iss/phdsubmit/thesisproposal/= So to submit files to this directory, you should copy them in, naming them after your matric number: =$ cp myproposal.pdf /afs/inf.ed.ac.uk/group/iss/phdsubmit/thesisproposal/x/$USER.pdf= Note that your username and the time of your submission will be logged in the file's metadata. If you're feeling particularly paranoid, you can verify that the file has made it into the directory: =$ ls -l /afs/inf.ed.ac.uk/group/iss/phdsubmit/thesisproposal/x/$USER.pdf= Note that, at present, if you need to resubmit your file you will _not_ be able to overwrite your previous submission. This is partly due to a limitation of the simple drop-box format, and should be worked around by submitting with an incremental file name, e.g. =$ cp myproposal.pdf /afs/inf.ed.ac.uk/group/iss/phdsubmit/thesisproposal/x/$USER-2.pdf= The file will still be marked as belonging to you, and the timestamp will help confirm the obsolescence of the previous file. -- Main.GrahamDutton - 23 Jun 2011
