Informatics Forum powerdown Saturday 6th November

The Informatics Forum building will be closed to all staff and students from 10.00am until approx 12.00pm on Saturday 6th November for repair of the building's electricity substation. Nobody, apart from authorised estates personnel, will be permitted in the building during the closure. The majority of School computing services will be unavailable from early on the Saturday morning until around 1pm (further details below).

Please do not enter, or be in, the Forum between 10.00am and 12.00pm (or whenever estates and building personnel declare the building reopened) on the 6th.

Computing service provision during the powerdown

As the bulk of our servers and services are located in the Informatics Forum, during the building power-off most services will be down and unavailable for the duration of the power cut (10am to 12pm), plus a certain amount of time either side of the power off due to time required to shut things down and then restart them.

As a basic rule of thumb people should assume that no Informatics services will be working during the power off, the exceptions being:

  • Informatics network provision in Appleton Tower and JCMB
  • (though no publishing will be available)
  • Plone WCMS sites hosted on

this is mainly due to those servers being located in Appleton Tower.

This means that the following (along with other services) will be unavailable: mail relays, networked file space eg home directories, and most web services. For a complete list of affected web sites see Nov2010WebSites.
