Checklist for setting up new staff

User self-registration for services

The following is relevant to all staff and research students. The user will need to do the following:

Support tasks

For all staff (and visitors):

For admin staff:

  • Add appropriate roles, usually copying previous post holder.
     modify-user UUN --addrole role
  • theon DB access is usually controlled via roles, however granting theon portal access is different
  • Take care when adding roombooking roles, not every admin person should have this.
  • We do not change the AD homedir path to afs, leave as default datastore, however if an admin person is transferring from another school we can change the PROFILE path to $inf
  • If the user requires access to any finance drives or legacy admin drives, edit lcfg/gype to add UUN to the appropriate valid_users list OR, if this is controlled via unix group, give them the corresponding role. Set their samba password which must match their DICE one. To do this:
    • On the user's MDP machine install Secure Shell via Application Catalog/Software Centre
    • run Secure Shell client and ssh to gype (as yourself)
    • run (as root):
       smbpasswd -a UUN
    • They may need to log out then back into windows before the drive can be mapped, as \\\Foldername
    • If they need to access many of the finance areas, instead of mapping each folder as individual drives, you could give them Finance from the us-unit shared afs area
