MPU Meeting Wednesday 18th November 2020

Ubuntu Focal Port of LCFG Platform

Stephen has mainly been working on the new network component for Ubuntu. The new schema has now been enabled for all clients but the component is not yet configured to be started. The template for the /etc/hosts file has been fixed so that it is compatible with the legacy component and correctly generates the desired short/long host name entries. The component has been tested and it now looks to be ready for wider deployment.

Move websites from HTTP to HTTPS

PGR computing

Alastair met with Bob Fisher, Mary Cryan & Neil Heatley to discuss this project. The options will be presented to the PGR staff/student liaison committee next week.

Miscellaneous Development

virtual dice
This is now all ready to go, Chris is just finishing the configuration for the new vdice.inf web service. Graham suggested publishing all the documentation with the addition of a statement that the web service will be available soon.

Operational

compute servers
It has been agreed that MPU will continue to manage the two new compute servers - hendry and selby

apparmor
This continues to cause problems for, at least: evince, libreoffice, openafs and reading man pages. We have agreed to disable the systemd service so that the policies will not be loaded. At some point we will investigate if there is a way to enable it without breaking lots of applications.

GPU report
Alastair has been working on collating GPU usage data.
