MPU Meeting Tuesday 15th March 2016

Alastair has been looking at the code for the suppliers reports.

LCFG Client Refactoring

Added support for finding the differences between profiles, components and resources. There are two modes in which this can work, a "quick" mode which stops as soon as it finds any difference and a "long" mode which finds all differences and groups them by added/removed/modified.

The Perl API now includes XS support for components and profiles.

SL7 Server Base

There are now package lists for the KVM server on SL7.2 along with systemd resources which ensure that the necessary services are only started when there are not going to be any further automatic reboots. The kvmtool template for SL7 guests has also been updated. The aim is to make the config similar to SL6 plus any essential new options. We need to investigate the various new features, will add this to the activities list.

We are still waiting on the DNS component being fixed to work with systemd.

Alastair blogged about the support for multipath and LVM on SL7.

The details on how to do bonding using the network component have been updated on the LCFG wiki.

Nothing happened.

Miscellaneous Development

Stephen enabled cgroups for a student, due to a bug this doesn't seem to work entirely as expected, see RT#76463 for details.

BMC problem on jubilee
The BMC on jubilee required a "hard reset" via the web interface.

The disk and DRAC firmware has been updated on metropolitan (Dell R710). The BIOS update failed, it appears to not work correctly on EL7, we should check if the versions provided for EL6 and EL7 are different. We also need to add the compat-libstdc++ to the "common" package list.

Chris will be upgrading the firmware on azul next Tuesday. At teh same time we need to reseat the machine as it is not sitting in the rails correctly. It also needs an FC cable attaching so that we can enable that option remotely if required.

virtual dice
An update to the virtual dice image is due to be released.

chinese input method
Stephen upgraded a user desktop (ednam) to SL7.2 to improve support for the chinese input method (see RT#76137 for details).

Dell 780 network interface
The LCFG header for the Dell 780 had the wrong network interface name, it should be enp0s25.

SL7.2 update
The office desktop machines will be upgraded to SL7.2 in the week starting 11th April.

Chris has done some investigations and concluded that the nautilus-open-terminal package works correctly in SL7.2 so it has been added back.

logout howto
There is now a page on howto logout from Gnome on SL7.2. We will link to it from the release notes when we announce the upgrade of user desktop machines.

MPU help pages
There are still a couple of MPU help pages which require a review. Stephen will do the SSH page, Chris will look at NX. feedback
The "help" feedback link on now creates an RT ticket.

SL6 and 32bit
Can we make SL6.6 the last minor release for 32bit support? This would save much effort when we port to SL6.7 (or SL6.8). Stephen also noted that the packages export server - porto - is still on 32bit. He will replace it with a new VM running x86_64.

The evolution mail client has been added to SL7. It appears that old config from SL6 needs to be deleted for it to work properly.

The lm_sensors tool can be used to expose useful temperature sensors. We should look at this some more, need to be careful not to conflict with IPMI uses by other tools (e.g. hwmon).
