MPU Meeting Tuesday 9th June 2015

LCFG Client Refactoring

Nothing happened.

Inventory

Nothing happened.

It would be useful for the inventory to include data on the cards in machines. This could for example list the exact models of NVidia cards in service, which could be invaluable when updating the NVidia driver.

Miscellaneous Development

The 7.1 update is in progress but not yet finished.

Some bugs we're working on:

Operational

Chris has reported the amarela failed PSU to Dell and has received a replacement. Dell has warned that the cause of the failure may possibly lie outside the failed PSU, in which case fitting it may blow a board. We'll go ahead anyway.

Chris has got salamanca up and running as the new LCFG DR server.

  • It's on the develop release; Chris will switch it to stable later this week.
  • Chris will test it as a profile server.
  • We'll keep the old DR server sauce running in parallel with salamanca for a while.

pkgsearch does not support SL7. It should. Chris will look into this.

Alastair has discovered why updaterpms runs slowly on SL7. In normal use, and in installs from the installbase phase onwards, its activities are being thoroughly logged by auditd. We don't want this to happen in the installbase, so Stephen will amend it appropriately. He'll also tune auditd performance more generally. It might help to start auditd after updaterpms, since audit information is not written to logs until auditd starts.

The KVM servers suspend their VMs to /var/lib, so we need to make sure that each KVM server has enough space there. On the subject of KVM servers, we're thinking of removing the default pool, and of removing br0 as the default bridge.

Phil Wadler has asked for his machine to be upgraded to SL7 by the end of June. Stephen will coordinate this with RAT.

Once sauce has been released from its LCFG DR duties, it will replace telford as the packages mirror server.

We need to adjust PolicyKit settings for NetworkManager on SL7.

Graphical login isn't working on a KVM desktop client after first boot (Bugzilla:3235). Might it help to upgrade a KVM server to SL 6.6? This could be tried out on circle or metropolitan.

This Week

  • Alastair
    • Inventory project
      • continue working through TartarusWorkFlow
      • complete new order file processing code and deploy into existing system
      • document new parser and API and integrate testing into RPM package
      • Add requirement on inventory project to report on graphic card model types (eg which nvidia models do we have)
    • Need to remove default bridge from kvmtool create
      • make necessary changes to live/mpu_kvm_server.h (support both methods)
    • Remove default pool if ops meeting agrees
    • Schedule firmware upgrade for DS3254
    • Look at SL6 install hang - speak to Carol - possibly LCFG bug #877 ??
    • Revisit upstream package list sync
    • Blog the final SL7 project report
    • Purchase new KVM server Purchase ticket submitted.
    • Take creation of mdp-installbase profiles to LCFG deployer's meeting (bug #878) (On July meeting agenda)
    • Look at LCFG bug #877 (lcfg-install problem)
    • Fix my bugs search - search on QA contact rather than list of components
    • Think about kvm server running out of disk space for suspending guests

  • Chris
    • url shortener
      • Talk at development meeting
    • Inventory project
    • Revisit upstream package list sync
    • Continue work on SL 7.1
    • Install new amarela PSU
    • Finish shift of DR server from sauce -> salamanca
      • test as profile server
      • test running with own packages?
      • move to stable
    • Look at pkgsearch for SL7
    • Respond re MPU kvm server
    • Think about kvm server running out of disk space for suspending guests

  • Stephen
    • LCFG client refactor stage 1
      • schedule debrief meeting
    • LCFG client refactor stage 2
      • finish off C code
    • Think about PD - Interested in ZeroMQ
    • Add extra memory to waterloo (and if those work, order up more memory for hammersmith)
    • Look at LCFG bug #876
    • Respond re MPU kvm server
    • How come we didn't spot that lcfg-installfixups was only in devel (not lcfg) - wrt stable release SL7 installs
    • Go through SL7 devel to see if anything in there that isn't in lcfg/uoe/inf etc that should be.
    • Pull auditd for SL7 installs, and look at tuning performance for general use.
    • Think about kvm server running out of disk space for suspending guests
    • Coordinate Phil Wadler's machine upgrade
      • speak to Tim
    • Deploy juice as new package server
      • perhaps use spare 500GB HP DL180 disks from 2.09 (discuss with Craig)
    • Investigate networkmanager polkit settings for SL7
    • Look at where lightdm stores users' chosen WM
    • New comodo certificate for cabin.inf
