MPU Meeting Tuesday 28th April 2015

The project has been signed off. Any further work related to SL7 will be operational or misc devel.

LCFG Client Refactoring

This is coming along nicely. Stephen has reworked the prototype C code into a better state which has nice things like error handling. The support for tag lists still needs finishing and it needs documentation, a few days of dedicated effort should get that all done.

Chris has documented the format of order files, Alastair has read through this and made a number of comments/suggestions to which Chris has responded.

Alastair has been working on getting the prototype working again.

There are problems with fetching the SelectPC MAC address data using smbget on SL7. This is really quite a fragile approach and it only works for the SelectPC machines. We will need an alternative machine registration approach. Could we use a PXE based net-boot system based on the LCFG installroot?

Alastair is now going through the Jan 2014 workflow notes and fleshing out the various sections.

Miscellaneous Development

sleep component
Sometimes on SL7 loginctl still reports sessions as "closing" long after the user has logged out. This has resulted in the sleep component not sleeping some machines, it will now ignore sessions in the "closing" state.

KVM server status
There is now a simple web page which shows the current usage status for the KVM servers. It is linked from the SimpleKVMDocs wiki page.

mock config
Stephen has removed some ancient SL5 stuff from the standard mock templates which made it impossible to build i686 packages using an x86_64 chroot.

The DIY DICE installs now use the installbase profiles.

Install hanging
For SL6 the first boot after the installroot finishes will hang maybe 1 in 20 times. It hangs just before the "do reboot" stage so never actually does the reboot. Alastair has been using a custom installbase with more debugging to examine the problem but this seems to be preventing the failure.

Memory ballooning
Chris couldn't see anyway to do memory ballooning on live VMs. He will invite COs to upgrade the memory for their VMs at a time when a stop/start is convenient.

Cores per VM
Could we increase the number of cores which are allocated to each VM?

The SSL certificate on wake.inf has been replaced with the new "proper" certificate.

This week

  • Alastair
    • EL7 project
      • Consider what could go in DICE release notes
    • Inventory project
    • RT 65774 - try two identical monitors on my machineIainR has two identical monitors on his SL6 box and doesn't encounter the problem
    • Need to remove default bridge from kvmtool create
    • Schedule firmware upgrade for DS3254
    • Look at SL6 KVM guest reboot hangs - tried reboot of brent and hjaelpe (both have local homedir) with no problems, but zipvm1 (AFS homedir, virtualbox) did hang for a couple of minutes, but galavm4 (AFS home dir, virtualbox ) didn't
