---++ MPU Meeting Tuesday 5th August 2014 ---+++ Virtual DICE Chris has written the [[https://wiki.inf.ed.ac.uk/DICE/FinalProjectReport239][final report]], Alastair and Stephen will review. ---+++ LCFG Client Refactoring Stalled. ---+++ systemd The componenth has been changed so that it is possible to link to services which are created within =/etc/systemd=, this makes it possible to set the default target to be something which we have created. The component also needs to be able to set the "preset" state for services. This means that package scripts will enable or disable the service as required at install time. ---+++ SL7 LCFG port Stephen has finished the installer support in the grub2 component. Alastair has discovered that the client component is failing to get the addresses for the servers. Also LDAP lookups do not always work. When LCFG is installed onto a natively-installed RHEL7 machine we do not see the same problem, it's not clear what is causing the problems on LCFG-installed machines. Removing DNS from the equation appears to resolve the issue (i.e. using IP addresses instead of names). It also appears that an LCFG-managed machine using DHCP is fine. The problems could be related to waiting for the network to be completely functional, there is a difference between =network= and =network-online= systemd targets. Is it just taking too long for the network card to auto-negotiate with the switch? It appears that the =ifcfg-eth= network scripts are parsed by a networkmanager plugin which converts them into the networkmanager configuration format. It's unclear just how much of the options in the old scripts are supported, we probably need a new component to generate native networkmanager config files. We can handle the network configuration needed for standard desktops with the current LCFG network component. We need to set the fully-qualified hostname using the new systemd tool - =hostnamectl= - so that everything works correctly. There appears to now be two types of hostnames, _static_ and _dynamic_. We need to fix the updaterpms performance issues related to the "flagging" stage. Should we run nscd when not using a local bind daemon? The LCFG mail component has now been ported to EL7 and appears to work. Chris has generated an LCFG desktop package list based on the Gnome package group. He will look at the various graphical components (e.g. lcfg-kdm) which need porting. ---+++ Miscellaneous Development None this week. ---+++ Operational $ ordershost : The ordershost has moved to _steen_ $ MPU reboots : We each need to choose some MPU servers to reboot. $ EPEL 6 : We have run out of space for new EPEL 6 packages. Stephen will come up with a plan to resolve the issue. This probably needs coordinating with Kenny. ---+++ This Week ---++ This Week * Alastair * Order a spare 600GB disk for waterloo (hot spare) * Double check latest web security reports * systemd project * start writing in blog * document the debugging including stuff about disabling graphical boot * Modify lcfg components/rc scripts list as a result of COs talk. * Consider how components will work with systemd * Look at how component triggered reboots will work * Start designing a systemd target structure for LCFG components * Add support for configuring presets * EL7 project * Continue looking at installer * lcfg-installfixups * Think about boot.run * attempt to group common cron and boot.run jobs together via cron/anacron * ? dostuff component that will do stuff daily.weekly, monthly etc ? * <strike>updaterpms cron job (in lieu of boot.run for now)</strike> * <strike>updaterpms performance</strike> * Add more memory to Forum KVM servers? - £700 per server to upgrade 64GB -> 128GB- (which ones?) * Look at iplimit for computing.help * RT tidy * Read and comment on Virtual DICE report * Remove ordershost stuff from schiff * Reboot circle and bakerloo, <strike>hilfe</strike> * Chris * Virtual DICE - complete final report * EL7 * continue work on desktop package list (based on gnome) * Look at what MPU stuff at DICE layer still needs done (for desktops) * url shortener * Reboot hare <strike>steen, bruegel</strike> to test firmware update * <strike>Fix whererpms wrt LCFG profile loading (fqdn)</strike> * Stephen * LCFG client refactor stage 1 * schedule debrief meeting * EL7 * Survey what disks sizes we have and what is partition current usage (eg /var, /tmp) * PXE install * openssh patches * Continue thinking about boot.run functionality - following week * Start work on SL6.5 * Reboot both ssh servers (hogwood/kubelik) and telford and budapest * Write up daily security checks * Think about PD * RT tidy * Read and comment on Virtual DICE report * Separate out EPEL6 mirror to current and legacy -- Main.AlastairScobie - 05 Aug 2014
