MPU Meeting Tuesday 12th November 2013

Inventory

Nothing happened.

Virtual DICE

Chris has had some helpful responses from the students, based on this he has improved the documentation. In particular it was noted that the students hadn't realised they need to use the Informatics VPN if they want a full DICE login. If we could allow access to the Informatics LDAP service from edlan then that requirement would disappear. They could then use their full DICE login from that VPN, resnet, the library, edlan wireless, etc. The other question was about printing, could we enable kerberised printing?

LCFG Client Refactoring

Stephen will ship the new client to the develop release machines.

Miscellaneous Development

audit reports
Stephen has been writing a new reporting framework for the Linux audit daemon. This provides much greater flexibility for querying the logs than the Perl version. He has also implemented whitelisting support for some reports so we can continue to log all the events but only report on the more interesting ones.

Operational

NX
central will be setup as a staff/postgrad NX server. The two internal disks will be used separately rather than as a mirrored pair. The second disk will be split between /tmp and /var/nx partitions. Stephen will check how the access to this service should be restricted.

bugzilla update
The latest security update for bugzilla (4.2.7) has been applied.

Power failure
We need an MPU chatroom on the IS jabber service for emergency coordination. MPU will do all restarts of KVM guests (mention this at the Operational Meeting). We should check that the LDAP slaves have a high priority since we need one to be available for the critical shutdown script. One benefit of the local LDAP slave is that the script doesn't have a dependency on a remote server in the event of a power cut. Chris will take hare down to check the BIOS configuration to figure out why it didn't come back automatically when the power was restored.

Christmas
Stephen will definitely be in on Monday 23rd December, he might be around on Friday 3rd January but won't know for a few weeks. Alastair will be away on Monday 23rd December but will be in on Friday 3rd January. Chris is away for both days.

This Week

    • Start Inventory project diary
    • Inventory project
      • Submit bug/enh to App::Cmd author wrt option to die on unspecified options
      • Pester George about location API
      • Publish revised schema (and document)
      • Flesh out processes
    • Order a spare 600GB disk for waterloo (hot spare)
    • Ask George - what does the TXretransmit value mean for switch connections?
    • Consider how to make metropolitan usable by users
      • Decide whether we do this now or not
      • ISOs
      • minimal docs (mostly manual)
      • they'll use virt-manager, but not create machines or change config
    • circulate table of LCFG bugs
    • Consider dhcpd component changes Just network component and install system for me. Propose adding a new resource to network component which understands the new tuple - this can be used in place of hwaddr_eth0 and, perhaps, ipaddr_eth0. Not sure about hostname_eth0.
    • Consider activities list
    • Ask Ian D to present his dhclient proposals to the next LCFG deployers meeting - schedule for January (or next meeting)
    • Look at gnome issue with NX - try inftest account
    • Tidy up RT tickets
    • Updaterpms - are the timeouts configurable - can we reduce for machines on Inf machines

  • Chris
    • Consider activities list
    • Continue learning about git and consider attending Floss git tutorial in Feb
    • Complete RT ticket tidying
    • Ask Inf-unit if we could open up unauthenticated LDAP to EdLAN (not just Inf) - so students can use Virtual DICE in IS space
    • Deploy central as staff/pg NX service, limited to Nigel first. Split 2nd disk in two - half for /tmp, half for /var/nx
    • Fix hare and metropolitan BIOS (so boot on power enabled)
    • inf level VM for COs

  • Stephen
    • NX
      • Finish tidying up NX config
      • Will continue looking at monitoring
      • Complete script to kill orphaned processes
    • LCFG client refactor
      • deploy to develop release
      • report
    • Consider dhcpd component changes
    • Consider activities list
    • Continue python PDP
    • Start project LCFG client - remove obsolete module dependencies - project 274
    • Stephen will email Paul and Herry about SL6.4 -DIYDICE_STICK_WITH_SL63
    • Tidy up RT tickets
    • Arrange for RO copies for SL6, EPEL and IS sites (off telford)
