MPU Meeting Tuesday 3rd September 2013

Alastair hasn't had much feedback from his consultation. He'll try organising a talk or two to get ideas and feedback on his inventory plans. We had a good and useful talk about the plans in the meeting.

Virtual DICE

Alastair tried the 64-bit image and it worked well, except that df hung on an amd mount. Chris will eliminate amd.

Chris will look initially into web and AFS for distribution of the images.

The initial version of the Virtual DICE management page is there. Chris is now working on the Virtual DICE user docs.

LCFG Client Refactoring

Nothing happened this week.

Miscellaneous Development

Server shutdown script
Stephen has been working on the location data for servers. The current plan is for the script to try a database query to get location info, failing which it'll fall back to a locally cached copy which will be refreshed a couple of times a day on a few chosen machines. He'll add an option which makes the script go straight to the cached copy.

Bakerloo is now installed, and NX is installed on it, but its configuration is not yet finalised. We talked about whether or not it should offer Maple and Matlab and suchlike machine hogs (we'll start off by having them present) and whether one NX machine will prove to be enough (we could spread it to more machines in time if necessary).

KVM server reboots
Chris found that it wasn't possible to hot-migrate VMs which had been started more than a few months ago. A VM's start date can be found in its log file in /var/log/libvirt/qemu on its host. Alastair clarified this later: "The problem is that an instance of a running VM has a variety of versions (for the different parts of the KVM platform) and that sometimes the version of KVM that ships with a new kernel no longer supports one or more of the versions of the running instance you want to resume or migrate. You need a guest restart, not just a guest reboot or a suspend/resume, for the guest to start using the new KVM." Anyway, this means that we'll need to shut down a lot of the VMs rather than suspending them, and cold migrate them rather than hot migrate, for our forthcoming KVM server reboots.

Package Search
Roger is finalising bits of the pkgsearch configuration.

Chris has put autoreboot on the MPU servers, or at least on those for which we thought it was safe.

Git project proposal
Stephen has been working on a project proposal to evaluate moving the LCFG configuration from Subversion to Git.

This Week

  • Alastair
    • Start Inventory project diary
    • Inventory project
      • Talk to CSOs - principally to ensure have covered every possible state and transition. Also to ensure not overly complicated to use
      • Schedule a technical talk
      • Submit bug/enh to App::Cmd author wrt option to die on unspecified options
      • Pester George about location API
    • Order a spare 600GB disk for waterloo.
    • Ask George - what does the TXretransmit value mean for switch connections?
    • Consider how to make metropolitan usable by users
      • ISOs
      • minimal docs (mostly manual)
      • they'll use virt-manager, but not create machines or change config
    • circulate table of LCFG bugs
    • Continue to pester Roger re pkgsearch (pull SSL out of machine config)
    • Try out Chris's virtual DICE image (again, new version)

  • Chris
    • Virtualised DICE image
      • Documentation - for users
      • Decide where users will download image from
    • KVM server reboots

  • Stephen
    • discuss release testing variants with Richardand then document.
    • Continue looking at freenx
