MPU Meeting Tuesday 16th July 2013

Alastair did some more work on fleshing out how the invedit command will work. He needs to do a brain dump of his thoughts and ideas on how the inventory will work.

Login Logs Viewer

The final report has been completed. Stephen had to do some further work on tweaking the summary email script so that is much more efficient. In particular he had to change the code to avoid Django caching huge numbers of event objects in memory when they would not be required at any later point in the code.

Sleep Enhancements

Chris has written the final report, it's now ready to send around to COs and for the project to be submitted for sign-off.

Virtual DICE

Chris now has the passwd and groups maps saved into local DB files and he is using the nss_db module to do the lookups. There was some debate about whether we should ship the DB files or source text files which can be used to generate DB files on each machine.

There are a number of different possibilities for user logins. As well as having a local guest user we could support DICE in either offline and online modes. The PAM stack probably needs a bit of thought to ensure it works as required. Chris now has pam_mkhomedir working which provides local home directories.

Chris has been having a lot of trouble with VirtualBox instabilities, is it worth trying a newer version?

LCFG Client Refactoring

Nothing happened.

Miscellaneous Development

The release notes have now been written. There might be an issue with the testing release and installing SL6.4, Stephen will look at it after the meeting.

There was a problem with doing PXE installs when machines were attached to 100MBit switches. This was seen in both AT and the Forum. The solution was to switch from mounting the NFS installroot using UDP to using TCP. It's not clear why this problem started occurring, it would be nice to properly understand the cause, if only to ensure it doesn't affect any other software. We should discuss this further with the Inf Unit.

The new VM server needs a FC card installing so that it has the option of using the SAN space. This would allow it to take over the guests on waterloo if we had a hardware failure. Once we have the FC card installed we should move one of the volumes on metropolitan to oyster

LVM scanfilter
Chris had problems with the LVM scan filter settings on oyster. Is this an SL6.4 issue? Alastair will take a look.

Kernel reboots
We should chase up machines which still require a reboot to get the latest kernel so we can drop the hacky "fix" for the perf security hole.
