---++ MPU Meeting Tuesday 28th May 2013 ---+++ Inventory Nothing much happened this week. Alastair has been working on the insurance survey, which overlaps with this project. It's clear that the category information (e.g. desktop, switch, server) is not particularly accurate. We only started collecting this data in 2011 so Alastair has had to go back through the historical orders data and fix it up manually. This work would have been necessary for the inventory project anyway. ---+++ Login Logs Viewer Stephen plans to send the first monthly login activity summary emails at the beginning of June. Before this the templates for the web error pages (404 and 500) need to be added so that don't get lots of avoidable error emails again. ---+++ Sleep Enhancements Chris has added a blog post entry about the forthcoming changes to the sleep component, he will also send a message to sys-announce. These changes will go live on Thursday morning. ---+++ Virtual DICE Toby is working on secure access to the LDAP DB through the firewall. This should allow us to implement a local auth DB cache of some sort. Chris has had some problems with importing the VM he has created. Exporting appears to work fine but it often fails to import. On DICE it failed the first time but worked correctly on the second attempt. It completely fails to import on various !MacOSX machines. Alastair will trying importing the image on Windows. Stephen suggested trying the 4.2 version of !VirtualBox on DICE to see if the import problems are actually caused by a bug in the exporter. Chris hasn't been able to get anywhere with the AFS and NAT problems. The suggestion is that this is related to UDP timeouts. Maybe a quick email to the openafs mailing list on how to tune !VirtualBox NAT settings might be the best way forwards. ---+++ LCFG Client Refactoring Stephen is [[http://blog.inf.ed.ac.uk/squinney/tag/lcfg-client/][blogging]] about his progress. ---+++ Miscellaneous Development ---+++ Operational $ kernel update : The new kernel will reach the stable release on Wednesday. Stephen will send out the usual message to sys-announce. We will also update to openafs 1.6.2 at the same time. $ LCFG bugzilla : Chris has widened the bugs _component_ field width so the summary tables are much easier to read. $ New limits component : Stephen has reviewed Graham's new limits component. He found one issue with it creating files in =/usr/lib/lcfg/conf= instead of =/var/lcfg/conf= $ apacheconf nagios : Stephen has looked at the proposed apacheconf nagios patch. He doesn't feel this is appropriate since it would alter the default behaviour which works well for most cases. It looks like a better approach would be to just allow component users to specify arbitrary command line options for each virtualhost check. $ pkgsearch : Stephen has reviewed pkgsearch and made a few suggestions on how it would be improved. ---+++ This Week * Alastair * Educate individuals about inappropriate KVM guest sizes * Start Inventory project diary * Inventory project * Look at App::Cmd * Pester George about location API * Look at performance improvement by indexing foreign keys * <strike>RT tickets</strike> * Review outstanding LCFG bugs for prioritisation * Order a spare 600GB disk for waterloo. * <strike>Consider activities list</strike> * <strike>Check SL6 fibre documentation up-to-date</strike> * <strike>Move PXE installer mod into bugs from activities list</strike> * <strike>Chase Tim for devproj entry for projects.inf</strike>Chased... * <strike>Try Chris's DICE VM - crustan:/disk/scratch/cc/goyen.ova</strike> * Chris * Virtualised DICE image * looking at local identity caching * check !VirtualBox AFS under NAT * mail AFS mailing list wrt running AFS on Virtualbox behind NAT * Review outstanding LCFG bugs for prioritisation * Stephen * <strike>Login logs - add error page templates - add user docs on computing.help</strike> * LCFG code cleanup * <strike>Suggest to Graham that he resubmits his apacheconf nagios patch to allow addition of extra check_http params</strike> * Review outstanding LCFG bugs for prioritisation * Consider activities list * Carol -- Main.AlastairScobie - 28 May 2013
