MPU Meeting Tuesday 15th May 2007

LCFG Website

Stephen has added quite a few links to the website to make it easier to link to the current documentation from other places, like the LCFG wiki.

Solaris Improvement Project

Nothing to report.

FC5 Upgrade

Alastair has resolved the FC5 laptop support bugzilla entry. That's the end of the MPU involvement in the FC5 upgrade!

FC6 Project

  • Carol has done some hardware testing on the GX260, identifying a CD-spinning-at-maximum-speed problem which Stephen will pursue.
  • Alastair has started looking at laptop support: initial indications are that there are DHCP problems when disconnected from the network.
  • Richard is happy to add fc6_64 to the set of platforms he tests every week, and Alison is happy with this too. A 620 or better will do for the fc6_64 testing. We've advised Richard on possible ways to speed up testing, if necessary, through improving network connections to the test machines - although currently they don't install any more slowly than similar machines elsewhere, he says.
  • RAT is working on its packages for FC6 32 bit first, and currently still uses the one RPM list for both 32 and 64 bit FC6, so 64 bit currently has some missing packages. RAT intends to split the package list into separate 32 and 64 bit versions, and in time to supply all of the teaching and research packages to 64 bit machines.

LCFG workshop audio tech
The analogue to digital converter (a Griffin iMic2) and the Profcast software have arrived and seem to work well together.

LCFG workshop environment
Stephen has got a vmware image running with a self-configuring LCFG server/client setup. A few issues remain to be tidied up after which he'll make the image available to the other presenters for their possible modification.

diydice problems
... have been resolved. The problem turned out to be caused by unnecessary extra file resources attempting to set the ownership of symlinks. In practice these were instead setting the ownership of whatever the symlinks pointed at, but at a subsequent run of the file component to the one that created the target directories - so the directories would be created with the correct ownership then suddenly acquire the wrong ownership at some later date.

Mac OS X 10.5 testing
Chris has tried Kerberos (no luck) and printing (some luck) and hasn't yet finished LCFG tests. He'll pass the results on to other units as appropriate.

This Week

Alastair will:

  • Flesh out bugs
  • Sort out DHCP support for fc6
  • Make this week's stable release.

Chris will:

  • update the Solaris devproj entry
  • LCFG workshop
  • Continue with 10.5 testing

Stephen will:

  • Work on the vmware image for the workshop.
