The MPU's stargazing list.

(It'd be helpful to keep a record of what stars we've gazed at and when, and roughly what we made of them - interesting for the future.)

Chris's priorities

I think The MPU's most urgent priorities are

  • Figure out how to integrate LCFG with event-driven startup systems, because we may well need to move to an OS using such a system after FC6. In fact LCFG is already in increasingly widespread use on such a system, launchd in Mac OS X. Also the day may well come when we have to buy servers which will only run Solaris 10.
  • Investigate virtual machines of any and all kinds.

Personally I'd just like to try out Solaris 10 smile

Stephen's personal development ideas

  • Follow up on the new stuff I learn from the UKUUG Advanced Perl course I am attending in February.
  • Investigate virtualization solutions for Linux - MPUVirtualization
  • I'd like to investigate what options we have for reducing power consumption for both server and desktop machines.
  • I think it would be beneficial to look at other configuration management systems to see what they have to offer. Particularly we should get a server/client system running to try out puppet. This is particularly aimed at getting ideas for future development of the LCFG server.
  • I'd like to spend some time investigating current best practices for doing OO programming in Perl and also network/server programming in Perl. This would lead into ideas for the LCFG code cleanup project.
  • It would be good to understand what is required to support SELinux for LCFG managed machines.

Alastair's development wishes

  • Update perl skills, particularly wrt object orientated perl
  • Learn Python
  • Investigate dependency based startup systems
