Possible MPU Server Purchases, 2019-22

Last year's assumptions:

• We can use virtual machines for non-critical "slave" roles.
• Where we can replace server hardware with VMs we should do so, to release the server hardware for use elsewhere.
• The LCFG master should be relatively young as it is so critically important.
• The VM servers should be relatively young.
• Servers are now purchased with a 5 year warranty.
• We don't care how old ssh servers are because they can be any old server (within reason). We'd prefer not to virtualise them.
• Any hardware fulfilling a non-critical function can be left until it fails, then replaced.

2019-20 developments

• New beefier server mohawk (Dell R740 - £10,000) replaces azul as KVM IF 3.
  • Staff remote desktop moves to azul from waterloo.
    • OpenAFS build server moves to waterloo from juice.
      • Dispose of juice.
• New beefier server moptop (Dell R740 - £10,000) replaces amarela as KVM for user guests.
  • Harvest memory and dispose of amarela.
• Extend warranties by 1 year:
  • salamanca → 2021-04 (~ £500)
  • amarela → 2021-06 (if we don't buy moptop) (~£900)
  • vermelha → 2021-06 (maybe) (~£900)
  • azul → 2021-06 (~£900)

2020-21 developments

• New beefier server beehive (Dell R740 £10,000) replaces girassol as KVM IF 2.
  • girassol is free.
• New beefier server bouffant (Dell R740 £10,000) replaces gaivota as KVM IF 1.
  • Distance Learning remote desktop moves to gaivota from vermelha.
    • Harvest memory and dispose of vermelha.
• Acquire low end cast-off bob.
  • Staff SSH moves to bob from steen.
    • Dispose of steen.
• Acquire low end cast-off bun.
  • Student/main SSH moves to bun from bruegel.
    • Dispose of bruegel.

2021-22 developments

• New beefier server mullet (Dell R750? £11,000) replaces azul as Staff remote desktop (if necessary).
  • azul is free.
• New beefier servers pompadour (Dell R250? £2000) and ponytail (Dell R250? £2000) replace altair and vega as LCFG slave IF and LCFG slave AT.
  • altair replaces bob as Staff SSH.
    • Dispose of _bob.
  • vega replaces bun as Student/main SSH.
    • Dispose of bun.
• Extend warranty by 1 year:
  • deneb → 2023-03
