Possible MPU Server Purchases, 2016-19

Assumptions:

• We can use virtual machines for non-critical "slave" roles.
• Where we can replace server hardware with VMs we should do so, to release the server hardware for use elsewhere.
• The LCFG master should be relatively young as it is so critically important.
• The VM servers should be relatively young.
• Servers are now purchased with a 5 year warranty.
• We don't care how old ssh servers are because they can be any old server (within reason). We'd prefer not to virtualise them.
• Any hardware fulfilling a non-critical function can be left until it fails, then replaced.

2016-17 Developments:

• New servers gaivota and girassol
  • KVM host IF 1 and KVM host IF 2 move to gaivota and girassol
    • jubilee and hammersmith are free.
      • Student remote desktop and Staff remote desktop move to jubilee and hammersmith
        • northern and piccadilly are free.
          • northern and piccadilly are powered off and kept for spares.
• OpenAFS build server moves to sauce.
  • budapest is free.
    • All of Informatics' 1950s have now been disposed of, so we get rid of budapest.
• oyster moves to Appleton Tower to become KVM host AT 2, freeing up circle from its subsidiary duty as backup to waterloo.
• (High priority purchase) Two new servers een and twee with desktop style CPUs - guesstimate cost £1000 per server
  • LCFG slave 1 and LCFG slave 2 move from VMs to een and twee
• (Lower priority purchase) New server drie with enough storage to provide several TB of usable space in RAID 10. - guesstimate cost £2500
  • Packages mirrors and RPM/package master merge and move to drie.
    • bruegel and juice are free.
      • Student SSH moves to bruegel.
        • schiff is free.

2018-19 Developments:

• Buy two new KVM servers zes and zeven (lots of cores, lots of disk, lots of memory).- guesstimate cost £10000 each
  • KVM host AT 1 and KVM host AT 2 move to zes and zeven.
    • oyster and waterloo are free.
• Buy new hardware - specs and quantity are as yet unknown, but for the sake of argument assume two machines acht and negen - for a new remote desktop solution - guesstimate cost £8000 each
  • Staff remote desktop and Student remote desktop are obsoleted by New remote desktop provision.
    • jubilee and hammersmith are free.
