Jabber client for Windows

There will be others, but these are the basic instructions on how to setup pidgin for Windows.

  • Download pidgin from https://pidgin.im/
  • Install, default options are fine.
  • The first time you run pidgin you'll be asked to "Add..." a new account, do so:
  • The settings should be:
    • Basic - Login Options
      • Protocol: XMPP
      • Username: UUN
      • Domain: inf.ed.ac.uk
      • Resource: BLANK
      • Password: {your DICE password, or leave empty to be prompted}
    • Basic - User Options
      • Local alias: BLANK if you wish
    • Advanced
      • Connection security: Require encryption
      • Allow plaintext auth: unticked
      • Connect port: 5222
      • the rest leave blank
  • When you click save you'll be asked to login, and your "Buddy List" window should appear.

That should be you connected. To find a chatroom to join, from your Buddy List:

  • Click Tools menu
  • Click Room List
  • Click Get List
  • In the "Enter a Conference Server" box just leave it as: conference.localhost
  • Click Find Rooms
  • Look through the list to find the chats to "Join", or "Add Chat" to add the chat to your Buddy List
