Jabber Client for Self-manged Linux Hosts

NB: These instructions were tested on Ubuntu 18.04. The settings for other releases and varieties of Linux should be similar.

  1. Install the Jabber client. We recommend Pidgin. On Ubuntu, this is done with apt install pidgin
  2. Start pidgin. You will be asked to create an account. In the Add account page, use the following settings:
    • Basic tab
      • Protocol = XMPP
      • Username = <your DICE username>
      • Domain = inf.ed.ac.uk
      • Password = <your DICE password> or leave blank
      • Leave all other fields blank
    • Advanced tab
      • Connection security = Require encryption
      • Connect port = 5222
      • Connect server = jabber.inf.ed.ac.uk
      • Leave all other fields blank

That should be it. You will be asked to accept the inf.ed.ac.uk certificate and should then be connected to the jabber server. Join the cos chatroom by clicking Buddies->Join a chat.. and enter cos in the room field.
