---+ Dell iDRAC 8 Some initial findings on the iDRAC8 management controller in the 13th generation Dell servers (e.g. R730). For our 'usual' IPMI purposes (power control, SOL console) the iDRAC seems the same as any others we have. Initial config proceeds as before. Beyond that: * The iDRAC is presenting an ssh interface. This presents an SMCLP interface, described in chapter 18 of the iDRAC8 manual. * The iDRAC has an HTTP interface, but it needs sensitive configuration (setting up Firefox as a SOCKS proxy) to get to it. It has one helpful-looking feature: "update firmware". We should get to know this. * The iDRAC has its own dedicated NIC. We need to decide whether or not we want to use that. The downsides of doing so are that requires an additional network port on our switches - and we haven't 'budgeted' overall for that - and that redundancy (against single switch/port failure) is arguably lost. This needs a policy decision probably. Note that currently the iDRAC *is* using its dedicated port. We could only fully confirm that it *can* used ports shared with Linux when the entire machine is up-an-running: that *should* work, but there have been bugs in the past.
