Final Report, Project 299

The project was requested by Paul Anderson with the aim to provide a lightweight Forum to replace the Forum software which has been deprecated by IS. His requirements included a Forum that was clean and simple to use - authenticates to EASE and available to anyone with an EASE account.

Drupal was chosen as the best solution - we already had drupal knowledge and it is now the University preferred content management system. It appeared that it would not require too much effort to install a suitable discussion forum using Drupal and this proved to be the case. We did little configuration in the first instance to see what the uptake might be. It was ready, as Paul requested, by the end of July 2014 for his pre-arrival IJP course. Thereafter, it was offered more widely to academics and has now been trialled on a number of courses. Feedback has all been positive. As the uptake was reasonable, we made some minor changes to the theme (the colour and logo) to make it more in-line with our pages. The discussion forums are accessible at

The total CO effort was 6 weeks.

What next ?

The following items have been identified as possible enhancements:

  • account creation - can this be further automated (including assigning appropriate drupal roles for specific forum access if required).
  • putting forum groups into 'containers' ? (e.g. all 2nd year courses into a 'year 2' container)
  • enabling email notifications of new posts to forum adminstrators.
