Final Report for Project 229 - Windows 7 Upgrade

Approach

We identified a number of key milestones which included:

  • Install test machine to allow us to test kerberos and openAFS
  • CSO training in MDP installation
  • Meet with ISS to discuss scheduling of upgrades. Dependent on solution for AFS/kerberos.
  • Purchase all necessary upgrade licenses
  • Ask competent end-user to help test. Dependent on AFS/kerberos solution.
  • Identify complete list of machine upgrades - about 70 in total.
  • Create timetable of user upgrades
  • Work out best options for firefox versions for theon/e-financials.
  • review way printers are installed - infcups vs IS queues. Users are able to add IS queues themselves.

Issues

  • The main issue was with a bug in Kaspersky interfering with the afs-client. Full report available.
  • Printing - some non-specific issues which resulted in us considering whether to use infcups or scieng queues.
  • We required a newer version of Firefox than IS were supplying by default. This has now been resolved.
  • We are the only users of the afs-client.

To do

  • Complete the move of admin staff to using IS group space.
  • Clarify virus software situation.

Effort

The project took 2 weeks CO time plus 21.5 weeks of CSO time. This was substantially more than we had expected at the start of the project but the AFS issues couldn't have been foreseen. This does not include time spent by other Units on helping with identifying the cause of the AFS problems.
