Final Report For Project 151 - Deploy TiBS to self managed machines

Introduction

The purpose of this project was to extend the use of the TiBS backup service to self managed machines. This has been accomplished and we now have a range of Windows, MacOS and Linux self managed machines being backup up via TiBS .

Work done

The majority of the work of this project was in identifying, testing and documenting the steps needed at both the client and server end to enable backups from self managed machines. This process was complicated by a number of factors. The majority of our self-managed clients are what are termed roaming clients, that is, clients which do not have a fixed IP address, and this required some interaction with Teradactyl since the majority of their documentation is written in the expectation that clients will have fixed IP addresses. The introduction of Windows 7 during the project also led to some issues being found with the software and documentation and the release of MacOS Lion and the difficulty in identifying a machine running Lion led to further delays. The documentation produced by the project can be found here.

Time taken

Total time taken on the project was 4.2 FTE weeks
