Please fill in actual activity for Last Month (March) and intended activity for This Month (April) for projects you are responsible for. For reference, the intended activity recorded for March is included where an entry had been made (it is considered unhelpful to alter this to match what actual activity was :). It is acceptable to change devproj milestones as part of this process, however if you do please indicate that you have done so below, for example by adding a Change of Plan bullet point, so that the meeting is alerted to the changes.

  • School Database Revamp
    • April: Additions/corrections from Graham. Then send out.
    • Last Month: Some changes made and now considered done.
    • This Month: Submit for sign off - Final Report

  • Password strength checks
    • April:
    • Last Month: Nothing. Hadn't we agreed to stall this pending the EASE work?
    • This Month:

  • Webmark Reform
    • April: Aiming for functioning form this month.
    • Last Month:
    • This Month:

  • School Database Revamp: Phase 1B & 2B
    • April: Complete QA of full process. Start writing process documentation.
    • Last Month: Away for two weeks so not so much, however about two thirds (and 20000 words) of the way through the documentation.
    • This Month: Complete the documentation. Complete transforms for auto-generated parts of the documentation (schema etc). Add support for running a local host/user TheonUI .

  • Lifecycle code design
    • April: Draw up plan for putting into service.
    • Last Month: A bit more testing and thinking about implementation plan. Mailed COs about entitlement preservation.
    • This Month: Finalise plan. Finalise any special-case entitlements. Begin roll-out.

  • Investigate AFS on ECDF storage
    • April: Keep prodding ECDF people.
    • Last Month: Orlando's been in touch, he's got me pencilled in for end of May, beginning of June
    • This Month: Remind myself what this GPFS stuff is!

  • Deploy Git/Gerrit as full services
    • April: docs, update Gerrit, simple component to restart Gerrit when necessary
    • Last Month: Component nearly done
    • This Month: finish component etc.

  • Review of OpenLDAP DICE client configuration
    • April: Depends on the decision made by CEG.
    • Last Month: Nothing.
    • This Month: CEG has asked for a discussion amongst all COs to decide whether or not we want to move to a client/server model. We (the Inf Unit) will summarize the suggestions, then call a meeting of any interested parties. Before that meeting we need to be clear on who is authorized to make the final decision; and/or how any disagreement will be resolved. Regarding the status of this work as a 'project': it might seem reasonable to wind it up as it is.

  • Replace CVS with SVN on www.inf
    • April: minor adjustments, awaiting final user testing
    • Last Month: minor adjustments, only just heard back re teaching scripts
    • This Month: get teaching scripts sorted, re-sync & test everything

  • DICE virtual image with teaching software for students - trial
    • April: When LDAP data is available from EdLAN, test Virtual DICE with it. If all is OK, update the Virtual DICE documentation.
    • Last Month: Toby arranged a temporary LDAP-on-!EdLAN test: Virtual DICE logins using DICE credentials worked fine. The Inf Unit will now work towards making the necessary LDAP data permanently available from EdLAN.
    • This Month: Once LDAP data is permanently available from anywhere on the Edinburgh University network, the Virtual DICE documentation on logging in will be adjusted to match.

  • Securing School Web Servers
    • April: Carry on with the list, but I'm away for nearly 2 weeks this month.
    • Last Month: Started work on detecting email spikes on web servers, having written my own script to record message numbers and produce averages, I've since discovered rrdtool would have done it for me (I thought it was "just" a graphing tool). So I'll probably go back and look at using that, rather than my script. Not strictly to do with this project, but I've been updating the wordpress.h header to hopefully make it more manageable when upgrading our various WordPress instances. Just in case I'm wrong, it isn't possible to do string comparison in C-preprocessor macros in LCFG, is it?
    • This Month: Finish the email detection script/header.

  • Intrusion Detection System
    • April: Inching forward, but AT decant has taken priority.
    • Last Month: Picked up again! Got a better handle on how the whole edifice is structured. Built some more packages as a result. Registered and got an "oinkcode".
    • This Month: With any luck we should have a working prototype up and running. As for how to integrate it into our management mechanisms, that doesn't look as though it'll be straightforward...

  • Options for two-factor authentication
    • April: Publish findings ...
    • Last Month: No significant work.
    • This Month: This project appears to have boiled down to finding/implementing a one-time-password scheme which can optionally be used for authentication (both ssh and Cosign) from outside the School. I will see what's available.

  • RHEL7 based LCFG port
    • April: We expect work on this project to accelerate as Alastair and Stephen will have more time for it from this month. We'll carry on with the plan.
    • Last Month: Ported lots of components to F20 (see here. RHEL7 RC candidate has now been released - now mirroring this. PkgForge is now configured to build against F20 and RHEL7 RC.
    • This Month: Switch focus from F20 to RHEL7 RC. Start work on ED and DICE headers (for INF layer). Aim for a RHEL7 RC machine managed by new systemd component. Develop systemd recipes for components.Provide a standard interface (for both SL6 and RHEL7) for calling service actions from components. Start auto building remaining components.Investigate ryslogd/journald interaction.

  • LCFG systemd component
    • April: Complete component. Try configuring systemd on a Fedora 20 machine (requires working rdxprof). Further look at how components will work (with minimal changes)
    • Last Month: Nothing
    • This Month: Complete component.

  • AT3/4/5 decant to FH
    • April: More meetings. Individual room specifications are next to be completed. Once those are in, things should quieten down from our point of view for a while, as the planning/warrant/tender/contract goes on.
    • Last Month: Plans appear to be finally finalised.
    • This Month: Expecting room data sheets to appear soon for checking.

  • AT6/7/8 decant to somewhere
    • April: Once who goes where is settled, things will no doubt liven up here too.
    • Last Month: Some more background activity on our expanding empire.
    • This Month: Assuming some form of public announcements, try to get the spaces refurbished to as close to our requirements as we cah.
