    • Last Month: Some work on nmap. Overall conclusions are: 1. Use nmap to produce daily 'diff' reports of port changes - being developed; 2. Buy Nessus for a year; use it and see if it's useful in practice; 3. Implement S/Flow on our networks (https://devproj.inf.ed.ac.uk/project/show/98) and use that to monitor for odd behaviour.

  • Server Hardware Interaction phase 2

    • Last Month: Get the server firmware update query system working.
    • This Month: Live with the system for a bit then write up and sign off.

  • OpenLDAP 2.4 Upgrade
    • September: Upgrade franklin (LDAP master) to SL6_64/OpenLDAP 2.4. Write report and finish this project.
    • Last Month: Nothing. Waiting on an okay for a non-disruptive date for the work.

  • Account reconciliation
    • September: Start grouping accounts to be deleted (based on large dataset of locked accounts which haven't changed passwords since last October).

    • This Month: Group remaining locked accounts into bite-sized chunks - need reliable end-date from database for this bit.

  • inf-unit SL6 server platform work
    • September: Start planning prometheus upgrade.
    • Last Month: No prometheus upgrade work. We already have an sl6 test prometheus VM.
    • This Month: Start planning prometheus upgrade. perl-AFS consensus needs to be reached (code changes to AFS conduits will probably delay prometheus upgrade). Write as much of the report as we can

  • MPU SL6 Server Upgrades
    • September: Produce an LCFG bugzilla theme for 4.2.3. Migrate the data from the current SL5-based bugs.lcfg.org
    • Last Month: bugs.lcfg.org was upgraded to SL6 and the latest stable bugzilla.
    • This Month: Upgrade [wiki|web|rsync].lcfg.org. Upgrade the packages master to 32 bit SL6.

  • Webmark Reform
    • September: Produce planning document. Announce.
    • Last Month: Prepare devproj descriptor, announce
    • This Month: Produce development plan

  • SL6 upgrade for Services Unit
    • September: AFSDB servers. vmware hosts. groups.inf.
    • Last Month: AFSDB servers upgraded (mostly by Toby). A couple more VMware hosts. Didn't look at groups. The 4 KB AFS file servers. blog.inf (was blob.inf)
    • This Month: More of the same. Will need to schedule a rolling program for the Forum and AT AFS servers.

  • SL6 upgrade for RAT Unit
    • September: tweaks on sl6 hadoop config and finish upgrading gridengine. Exam Prep Latex QA.
    • Last Month:more gridengine,several GPFS Servers rt4 installed
    • This Month: finish upgrade

  • KDC upgrade to 1.9
    • September: Once Services can move afsdb easily, upgrade site slaves. Install new master as slave and put into service.
    • Last Month: Upgraded all site slaves. New master (bevan) installed as slave and put into service
    • This Month: toby/gdmr to consider plan for moving bevan to master; some investigations into running a 1.9 master have already been done

  • System Security Enhancements.
    • September:
    • Last Month: Produced daily reports giving details of SSH authentication failures so that we can try to spot attacks. Testing collection of audit logs to a remote host. Mostly finished writing an LCFG component to configure the AIDE (Advanced Intrusion Detection Environment) software. (Alastair, for Stephen)
    • This Month: Complete AIDE component and produce documentation. Decide on a suitable AIDE configuration for our servers. (Alastair, for Stephen)

  • Windows 7 Upgrade
    • September: Negotiate restarting upgrades
    • Last Month: Stalled again. Still issues with file saving. Identified Kaspersky as cause of one issue but removing Kaspersky hasn't resolved problems completely.
    • This Month: Meeting IS to discuss options including moving user space, including group space, to IS file space. Note: Windows XP end-of-life at end of year.

  • Documentation update - managed platform unit
    • September: Some explanation of what DICE platform is. Document DIYDICE
    • Last Month: Nothing - waiting on URL restructure
