Development Meeting Project Activity - 2010-03-03

Please fill in activity for Last Month and intended activity for This Month for projects you are responsible for. For reference the intended activity for Last Month as reported at the February development meeting is included (it is considered unhelpful to alter this to match what actual activity was :). It is acceptable to change devproj milestones as part of this process, however if you do please indicate that you have done so below, for example by adding a Change of Plan bullet point, so that the meeting is alerted to the changes.

  • AFS file system
    • February: Full deployment of component -> signoff
    • Last Month: Component deployed on all DB and file servers
    • This Month: Signoff

    • This Month: Submit final report for sign off.

  • Logging policy and centralised logging
    • February: Big push to incorporate other units' logs.
    • Last Month: Little push happened, the idea being to incorporate a reasonably representative selection of logs. The project's index page is here, and the draft evaluation is here.
    • This Month: See if there are any other general types of logs not yet incorporated. Ideally then produce final report and recommendations.
    • Comment: Would a presentation at next month's meeting be helpful?

    • This Month: Add git support to LCFG build tools. Work on automating testing. Investigate object serialisation/storage systems.

  • Future direction for the main Informatics web service
    • February: Install new web server in AT. Produce plan for web site and and off site resilience. Put milestones back to end of March.
    • Last Month: Replacement server for www.inf ended up in Forum (wafer.inf), rather than AT. Craig and I did meet to discuss the plan for the web site and off site resilience, but going back and looking at this project, it has drifted way off course and it doesn't seem appropriate to add more to this project. As 18th months have passed since this project started, things have moved on. Particularly Polopoly looks more capable than it was back then. Note the "Risk" section in the project description. What we'd like to do is shut this project down, and start a new project which more accurately describes what's going on.
    • This Month: Well it depends on what the meeting agrees, either we continue to shoehorn the work we are doing in migrating content to Polopoly and the technical changes into this "review" project. Or drop/sign off this project and draw up a new one covering the work actually being done.

  • Final Stages of Commodity WCMS work
    • February: Put milestones back to March/April and try again with the header files.
    • Last Month: Nothing done.
    • This Month: Same as last time, complete header files.

  • OpenVPN Service
    • February: Move endpoint. Linux docs. Aiming for signoff in March.
    • Last Month: Didn't get Linux (network manager) docs done. Endpoint has moved, so hardware is now all in place.
    • This Month: Linux docs, and get ready for signoff.

  • School Database Revamp
    • February: Tidy up some loose ends associated with switching over to PostgreSQL for the live service. Complete management, tools, support and technical documentation. Evaluate and prototype potential technologies for re-factor of the generic user interface. Produce plan for phase two and completion of schema change management for phase one.
    • Last Month: Most loose ends tied up (minor things remaining for account/role management). Most core (interim) documentation completed (some tool documentation remains to be done). Work started on plan for phase two and completion of phase one.
    • This Month: Complete plan and interim documentation. Meeting with user support to go over core operational procedures for the new service. UI technology evaluation/prototype.

  • Forum Information Display Screens
    • February: Specify and order OneLan boxes. Otherwise, no more effort needed for either touchscreens or large screens: intention is to prepare final report and submit for signoff.
    • Last Month: Some necessary rework of the touchscreens; specified OneLan boxes and chased quotes; prepared final report.
    • This Month: Obtain and install first OneLan box. If successful install the second. Final report not expected to change; submit for signoff after some reasonable elapsed time.
