Development Meeting Project Activity - 2009-11-04

Please fill in activity for Last Month and intended activity for This Month for projects you are responsible for. For reference the intended activity for Last Month as reported at the September development meeting is included (it is considered unhelpful to alter this to match what actual activity was :). It is acceptable to change devproj milestones as part of this process, however if you do please indicate that you have done so below, for example by adding a Change of Plan bullet point, so that the meeting is alerted to the changes.

  • AFS file system
    • October: Test DB server on KDC, prepare to switch fileservers
    • Last Month: Further testing of deployment of DB servers to KDC and component management of DB server processes
    • This Month: Deployment of new component to file servers

  • Review of Backup Technology
    • October: Probably not much due to holidays.
    • Last Month: Not Much
    • This Month: Depends on project prioritisation meeting

  • Improved RPM submission tool
    • October: Will deploy early this month (15/09/09) HOWTO documentation to be fleshed out.
    • Last Month: Deployed and Documentation completed
    • This Month: Propose drop enhancements from scope: misc development later. Planning for signoff (incl report) at December meeting

  • Review of user documentation
    • October: Collate various input and produce a revised document.
    • Last Month: No progress.
    • This Month: Produce a final a document for discussion.

  • Replacement of LPRng with CUPS
    • October: finish e-financials + persuade non-CUPS self-managed to goto CUPS
    • Last Month: Persuaded non-CUPS self managed to go to CUPS
    • This Month: Signoff

  • Transition of Informatics staff mail services to Staffmail
    • October: Try again to move the shared boxes. The deadline was to have done the move by this meeting, do we let it slip or move?
    • Last Month: No deliberate progress, but there are slightly less shared mailboxes on mail.inf now due to ISS now having mail going to the ISS RT system rather than their shared mailboxes. Moved milestones back to end of year.
    • This Month: Will try again to move at least a small number of shared folders to staffmail.

  • Cluster Parallel filesystem
    • October: Not a lot
    • Last Month: cleared out most of the dead 530's and added new (old) rackmount kit.
    • This Month: rebuild the filesystem with the new servers

  • Revisit Account Management
    • October: refactor storage object primary key structure; more conduit development; general framework enhancements/bug-fixes
    • Last Month: Very little happened, beyond reviewing some existing changes.

  • LCFG Core Refactoring
    • October : Switch package building to Module::Build. Run code through perltidy. Remove all pre-processed Perl files, replace macros with a module to handle configuration.

  • Desktop Virtualization
    • October: Deploy Opensource version of Virtualbox with separate PUEL header for academic licensed version. Write article for newsletter. Propose for sign off.
    • Last Month: Reviewed OSE package.
    • This Month: The OSE package for Fedora11 has complex and numerous dependencies that will be difficult to sort in SL5 and should be a lot simpler in RHEL6. Propose leaving the situation as is with the PUEL header deployed until RHEL6. On that basis write newsletter article and propose for sign off at next meeting.

  • DICE SL5 Services
    • October: Not known: work remains for the Services Unit.
    • Last Month: Maelcum decommissioned
    • This Month: remaining servers (powell & linotype) decommissioned

  • Future direction for the main Informatics web service
    • October: Finish the ISS site integration. Need to look at HTML and style restrictions for IIAB. Skin improvements: login form, add conditionals banner template. Really want to get header file done and possible component.
    • Last Month: Not much of the planned activity. But www.icsa.inf is now partially host on Plone using the IIAB skin. The work done helping with that, and more ISS issues, has highlighted issues that we'll want to consider, ie while transitioning www.inf content, we really want a Plone instance on the same hardware as the existing www.inf, this is to make proxying more feasible. For institutes/projects do we want to keep offering https URLs (which eat up IP addresses and X509 certs), or just get them to accept that the URL to edit would be of the form wcms.inf.ed.ac.uk/sitename/? We need to produce local docs on the basics of using Plone, using permissions, work flow. Also printing plone pages was shown not to be ideal. Some quick fixes per site have been applied. Put milestones back to end of Jan 2010.
    • This Month: Try to do what I said I'd do in October, but due to possible jury duty, it could be limited.

  • Develop power management solution for DICE desktops
    • October: If test deployment continues to prosper, deploy on all Student Lab HP dc7900s.
    • Last Month:Deployed on all student lab HP dc7900s. Added an explanatory web page. Added some questions to the Support FAQ. Wrote a newsletter article.
    • This Month: Hopefully moving to signoff.
    • Change of plan: September's meeting added three new goals to the project: "May be useful to have user commands to disable sleep. Wake up on keypress/mouse still desirable. WakeOnLAN work from IS could be incorporated." The MPU wants to tackle these as separate independent small tasks later on as time and project prioritisation permits rather than adding them to this project. Is this acceptable?

  • Informatics Commercialisation Website
    • October: I don't see there being any commercialisation specific effort this month. Put milestones back 3 months (they were already 2months behind).
    • Last Month: Some of what was done for the ICSA site could be classed as commercialisation work, but nothing specific.
    • This Month: Again, I don't see much effort being expended specifically in this project. This project will benefit from any effort spent on project 93, the future of the Informatics web service.

  • OpenVPN Service
    • October: Hoping to move to a "proper" service; some documentation enhancements
    • Last Month: More testing by more users; Forum endpoint has ether bonding on "inside"
    • This Month: Improve Linux documentation

  • EUCLID Informatics Enhancements
    • October: Probably nothing.
    • Last Month: Some work moving PAVD/PGT to the next admission cycle suggests some improvements to the process may be necessary.
    • This Month: Nothing.

  • EUCLID Interoperability
    • October: Propose stalling until start of 2010.
    • Last Month: Proposed generic interface data set reviewed.
    • This Month: Nothing.

  • School Database Revamp
    • October: Likely to be not as much again due to the normal effort associated with the start of a new academic session. Migration of triggers and procedures to PostgreSQL. Finish benchmarks. Ingres -> Postgres sync and load for initial QA of GUI and reporting.
    • Last Month: All functions and triggers (including core assessment processing functions and the unit event queue processing mechanism) have been migrated to PostgreSQL. Much work done on the Ingres -> PostgreSQL content migration which is now mostly complete bar correction of actual content errors and conflicts which need to be addressed on a case-by-case basis. Work on the PostgreSQL account creation and automated role (from LDAP) assignment, also largely complete. Deployment of PostgreSQL version of GUI. Productisation of the "genrep" and "conduits" framework for deployment as a package.
    • This Month: Setup of regular Ingres -> PostgreSQL DDL, GUI data content and infdb content sync. Conversion of all "live" conduits to PostgreSQL (approximately 400). Completion of "conduits" framework with conversion of incoming feeds and automated conduit generation process. QA of conduits and assessment processes. Conversion of direct interfaces (account management and inventory). ITO QA starts on transferred database and content (via GUI and genrep).

  • Forum Information Display Screens
    • October: Document requirements for the large screens; do some investigation of how the requirements might be realised. Finalise the work related to the small screens, and hand over to User Support. Milestones for this project slipped in July; I have revised them accordingly.
    • Last Month: Finalised and documented small screens; handed that work over to User Support.
    • This Month: Investigate large screens.

  • AV facilities
    • October:
    • Last Month: No progress other than ventilation added to GZ.11
    • This Month: Complete documentation in collaboration with Admin.

  • Moving kit from sites to Forum
    • October: BP move completed, FH planning finalised
    • Last Month:Move out of 2501 completed. BP nearly completed
    • This Month: BP move completed, FH planning finalised

  • Upgrade Twiki
    • October: finalisation and completion (hopefully)
    • Last Month: Review of look & feel, minor tweaks
    • This Month: Hopefully nothing (sign off?)

  • Progress TiBS to full service
    • October: Upgrade RPMs and LCFG component for latest version of TiBS. Deploy RPMs and LCFG component on TiBS server.
    • Last Month: Upgraded RPMs and LCFG component for latest version of TiBS. Realised that further development work was necessary before v1 deployment. The development work is now mostly done.
    • This Month: Deployment on the TiBS server and on Linux clients is expected to be completed in the next couple of weeks.
    • Change of plan: The 'v1 deploy' milestone has slipped by one month to 17 November.

  • inSpace
    • October: Testing MDP Mac using IS managed LCFG devolved service. Can login with A/D account. Have work to do to get AFS client working so DICE users can access their AFS home/group space. Need to install software for managing content to go onto displays (ACE should be able to provide this), although they use Cold Fusion.
    • Last Month: Not much progress as it's been unclear when/if new media scotland are vacating the space. Most work centered round adding software to the existing MDP-MAC amchine. Started working on a component to manage Henrik's CMS client.
    • This Month: ship component, inventory the machines in inspace. Since it appears that NMS are a permanent fixture we need to work out some way of coordinating things.
