Development Meeting Project Activity - 2009-09-02

Please fill in activity for Last Month and intended activity for This Month for projects you are responsible for. For reference the intended activity for Last Month as reported at the July development meeting is included (it is considered unhelpful to alter this to match what actual activity was :). It is acceptable to change devproj milestones as part of this process, however if you do please indicate that you have done so below, for example by adding a Change of Plan bullet point, so that the meeting is alerted to the changes.

    • August: Aim for signoff at next meeting.
    • Last Month:Final report written
    • This Month:Hoping for signoff (but aware of UPS issues!)
    • Comments: Final report linked from devproj entry, UPS monitoring started but issues with spanning maps holding back. Meta issue about where final reports should be put, Ian to consider location as part of docs report.

  • Transition of Informatics staff mail services to Staffmail
    • August: Transfer the sysman mailboxes into staffmail and look at the remaining shared mailboxes.
    • Last Month: Currently no further progress, but there's still time! It turns out there are about 15 shared areas, and about 100 individual mail folders within those areas.
    • This Month: Try again to move the shared boxes. The deadline was to have done the move by this meeting, do we let it slip or move?
    • Actions: Alastair discuss automated ACL management for shared folders on staffmail with Chris Adie. [Action: Alastair]

  • DICE under emulators

    • This Month:Get some other-unit perspectives in the table
    • Comments: Will pester other units.

  • Cluster Parallel filesystem
    • August:
    • Last Month:
    • This Month:
    • Comments: Not much, new machines 3/4 setup and will finish this month, milestones changed. Still no user response to test.

  • Revisit Account Management
    • August: Finish LDAP export conduit. Complete tree construction. Initial implementations of Kerberos and AFS pts conduits. Light 6 shows in the Festival.
    • Last Month: transition to git/gerrit; reworking of xml conduit uploads; addition of ldap role storage; advancement of text file (specifically role) upload; some framework reorganisation
    • This Month: refactor storage object primary key structure; more conduit development; general framework enhancements/bug-fixes
    • Comments: Toby doing some work associated with LDAP. Not expected to be running for start of session.

  • LCFG Core Refactoring
    • August : Complete test suite. Import dependencies.
    • Last Month: Test suite mostly complete, dependency imports prepared but waiting on completion of test suite
    • This Month: Switch package building to Module::Build. Run code through perltidy. Remove all pre-processed Perl files, replace macros with a module to handle configuration.
    • Comments: Various unexpected differences between LCFG slaves which needed to be fixed in order to make a viable test suite.

  • Desktop Virtualization
    • August: Nothing.
    • Last Month: Nothing.
    • This Month: Deploy Opensource version of Virtualbox with separate PUEL header for academic licensed version. Write article for newsletter. Propose for sign off.

  • DICE SL5 Services
    • Last Month: Nothing.
    • This Month: Not known: work remains for the Services Unit.
    • Comments: Virtual rbs by end of next week.

  • Future direction for the main Informatics web service
    • August: Meeting arranged for Aug 12 between main stakeholders in School web site and University web project.
    • Last Month: Had our meeting. still pressing head with some basic polopoly pages for recruitment, plone for everything else. Spent quite a bit of time thinking about plone for ISS (student services) and how it will integrate with www.inf (probably going to run a zope instance on www.inf hardware). ICSA test skinned. Just let milestones slip (1 month now).
    • This Month: Finish the ISS site integration. Need to look at HTML and style restrictions for IIAB. Skin improvements: login form, add conditionals banner template. Really want to get header file done and possible component.
    • Comments: Style seems to be acceptable.

  • Develop power management solution for DICE desktops
    • August: Test deployment in one lab. Test Condor integration.
    • Last Month: Tested deployment in one lab. Moved deployment to another lab. Tested Condor integration.
    • This Month: If test deployment continues to prosper, deploy on all Student Lab HP dc7900s.
    • Change of plan: I've slipped the date for the deploy milestone by a week or so. More importantly it's changed from "deploy across all DICE desktops" to "deploy on new HPs in student labs".
    • Comments: May be useful to have user commands to disable sleep. Wake up on keypress/mouse still desirable. WakeOnLAN work from IS could be incorporated.

  • Informatics Commercialisation Website
    • August: Follow up their thoughts of the IIAB and the rumors mentioned above.
    • Last Month: Spoke to DJCR, they are not giving up on us providing them with a commericialisation web site. They are appointing a web/db person, but that is for something else.
    • This Month: I don't see there being any commercialisation specific effort this month. Put milestones back 3 months (they were already 2months behind).

  • OpenVPN Service
    • August: Set up AT endpoint hardware, but will only move to it as part of overall return to AT basement.
    • Last Month:Test-running with no problems apparent; now 41 users
    • This Month:Hoping to move to a "proper" service; some documentation enhancements
    • Comments: Should do a newsletter article ("to become a supported service").

  • School Database Revamp
    • August: Finish XML Schema representation (triggers, procedures and indexes). Finish SQL DDL generation from XML Schema. Deploy and QA PostgreSQL version of Ingres system (against GUI and reports). Productize GenRep , Conduits and interfaces ("daidb" account stuff). Development of PostgreSQL -> Ingres automated back sync for use for one year after switch to PostgreSQL. Completion of benchmarking. Further investigation into change based deployment of schema changes. Investigation of XML Schema extension and validation.
    • Last Month: Not nearly as much as hoped for due to conflicting priority development work for teaching. SQL DDL generation does now create all referential integrity constraints (instead of the rules/procedures used to do this in Ingres) and successfully produces an automatically loadable PostgreSQL equivalent data model. More work done on benchmarks (data model and auto generated random content now loadable in both Ingres and PostgreSQL) but proving difficult to make the queries compatible across Ingres and PostgreSQL. XSLT augmentation support added to the XML Schema processor as well as integration of include/import path fetching and following (ignoring duplicates). Validation also added to the processor and the schema is almost validating (some minor fixes required). Now have a deployable PostgreSQL version of GUI (under version control as well) and some initial QA work done (against empty data model).
    • This Month: Likely to be not as much again due to the normal effort associated with the start of a new academic session. Migration of triggers and procedures to PostgreSQL. Finish benchmarks. Ingres -> Postgres sync and load for initial QA of GUI and reporting.

  • Forum Information Display Screens
    • August: Establish requirements for large screens, and produce a working prototype for the small screens.
    • Last Month: Established the owning user for the large screens; now have a preliminary requirements spec. Have a working prototype for the small screens using the lcfg-webkiosk component; these should now be deployable, pending final testing and documentation.
    • This Month: Document requirements for the large screens; do some investigation of how the requirements might be realised. Finalise the work related to the small screens, and hand over to User Support. Milestones for this project slipped in July; I have revised them accordingly.

  • AV facilities
    • August:
    • Last Month:
    • This Month:
    • Comments: Mediascape were working in August but did not complete. No report still despite being repeatedly chased. Poor cabling in SSR. Have met with new event coordinator to clarify what we are and are not responsible for.

  • Moving kit from sites to Forum
    • August: BP decant, contuinue planning FH move
    • Last Month:BP details finalised, FH planning started
    • This Month:BP move completed, FH planning finalised

  • Upgrade Twiki
    • August: address identified loose-ends
    • Last Month: little activity (due to annual leave)
    • This Month: finalisation and completion (hopefully)
    • Comments: Sign off.

  • Progress TiBS to full service
    • August: Use spanning map to feed client sourced backup resources for non-AFS disk partitions into the TiBS server config. Manage the rest of the TiBS config files. Finalise the list of TiBS config files. Upgrade RPMs and LCFG component for latest version of TiBS if that becomes available.
    • Last Month: Obtained tarball of latest TiBS version. FInalised the list of TiBS config files.
    • This Month: Upgrade RPMs and LCFG component for latest version of TiBS. Deploy RPMs and LCFG component on TiBS server.
    • Change of plan: The milestones have been slipped by one to two months and more milestones have been added, more accurately reflecting our current multi-stage strategy for the project.

  • inSpace
    • Comments: Testing MDP Mac using IS managed LCFG devolved service. Can login with A/D account. Have work to do to get AFS client working so DICE users can access their AFS home/group space. Need to install software for managing content to go onto displays (ACE should be able to provide this), although they use Cold Fusion.
