Crichton

A common error message when using a terminal is "command not found". This can occur in a few ways:

  • mistyping the command
  • the software is not installed on the machine
  • the user's path is misconfigured

"crichton" will try to be more informative as to the reason for the failure and to help the user find or acquire the missing software.

On All Machines

  • If there is a suggestion that the command has been mistyped then some suggestions may be made.

On Gateway Machine

  • Most software is not installed on gateway machines. The user will be reminded of this.

On Staff/PGR Machines

  • If the software is not installed then the user will be advised of the reason eg it may be licensed and restricted to certain users or machines.
  • If the software is not installed then the user may be prompted to request installation.

On Lab Machines

  • If the software is not installed then the user will be advised of the reason eg it may be licensed and restricted to certain machines or it may require certain hardware.
  • If the software is not installed then the user may be prompted to request installation.

To send a software installation request please use the Computing Support form. (That is, software installation does not happen instantly.)

For more details type man crichton or man crichton_modules.
