Strategy

  • We should be innovating, otherwise we are not sufficiently differentiating ourselves from IS and other Schools.
  • Innovation can take a number of forms:
    • Creating our own new services
    • Deploying third party prototypical and evolving services
    • Deploying mature third party services where a local need is identified and such services are unlikely to be run in the near future outside the School

  • Strategic plan:
    • 10 year lookahead is too long to be useful
    • 5 year lookahead is very hard to get right
    • 3 year lookahead is achieveable

  • Vision:
    • Where we might be?
    • What will we be doing?

  • Much of what we are doing now is commoditised (and will be more so in a few years) and taken up by the centre
    • We will need to fill the vaccuum (by innovation):
      • Try things out and "test the water). e.g. DICE Labs, not-a-service
      • Discuss with Academics and tease out potential areas for development
      • Review recent UG4/MSc projects for ideas
      • Have another "whiteboard" C[S]O team strategy brainstorm:
        • involve academics if possible
        • from this units produce their own 3-year directional report
        • unit heads should involve unit members in producing the report
        • unit members must be encouraged to think outside the box and their own unit area
      • It would be useful to know if are services are largely used by older established academic staff and not younger newer academics
      • Meet with new Chancellors Fellows individually and ask what they need

  • Research
    • do newer staff use less of our services, if so why - lack of awareness, we don't provide what they need, easier to use external providers
    • whats in self-managed server room and whats it doing, is it just compute or web services
    • risk of using external services - limited awareness of data protection, less flexibility

  • Teaching
    • will teaching change much - such that we don't need a standard platform (virtual or physical)
    • online exams - no increase in take up, will there be more or less, remote assessment
    • standard platform is cheapest option, but could be virtualised or made more portable in other ways - portfolio of solutions

  • Commodity
    • want to be led by research
    • should we do any at all
    • needs to be suitably differentiated for our own users needs (from IS and other Schools needs), perhaps beyond just needing to fit within our own local infrastructure
    • need new services
    • review all our existing services against these criteria (and Innovation above)

  • Can we use logs for our services to determine usage levels and by whom (category of user)
    • e.g. coltex logs, AFS volumes throughput and disk usage, homepages, various web/other services logs, buzzsaw

  • Under-pinning Technology
    • LCFG + Linux Platform
    • Own Kerberos/Cosign or EASE and IS KDC
    • LDAP vs centralauth, prometheus speed of changes
    • Network - differentiation - firewall link with LCFG, inventory linkage, local devolved switch config
    • Virtualisation
